MEET THE ISUZU TECHNICIAN: BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE PIT CREW EXPERIENCES WITH WAU

Sep 14, 2023 3min read

Supercars have always captivated automotive enthusiasts nationwide.  The thrill of high-speed races, ear-piercing roars of powerful engines and the strategic expertise behind the scenes creates an unparalleled spectacle.

Behind Walkinshaw Andretti United’s team, there is a dedicated group of professionals working diligently to ensure the garage is a safe working space and the vehicles perform at their peak.

As a partner with Walkinshaw Andretti United this season, we had the opportunity to send a few lucky Isuzu technicians to their paddock to experience what the garage is like on a race day weekend. We caught up with one of the technicians, Kim Coronacion, on his experience at the Townsville 500 to learn more about his extraordinary experience within the world of Supercars.

How long have you been working with Isuzu Trucks?

I’m currently completing my 3rd Year level Apprenticeship at Bendigo Isuzu.

What was your first reaction when you found out you won this year's Isuzu Supercars Technician Experience?

Astonished, as I have never been to a V8 Supercars race before.

What was it like being in the Walkinshaw Andretti United garage on race day?

It was a very busy and exciting day on race day. I got to observe the whole team do their part throughout the race. I also had a satisfying ending to the experience as the team managed to secure 3rd position at the end of the race.

What kind of support did you provide during the races?

I provided support by assisting some of the mechanics and sweeping floors. I was able to lend the team a hand by moving race car tyres to-and-from semi-trailers, and to the team’s garage.

What was the best part about the experience?

The best part of the experience was getting to meet the team and watching the actual race cars on the track in person.

What similarities did you see as the team was working on the Supercar, compared to working on an Isuzu truck?

They have excellent communication, organisation and teamwork skills.

What surprised you the most being in a Supercars garage?

How extremely clean, tidy and organised the garage was. Also, how alert everyone was.

Is there anything that you saw in the Supercars garage that you'll take with you to the Isuzu workshop?

The level of tidiness and organisation that I observed during my experience in their garage.

What were your takeaways from the experience?

Teamwork, the level of alertness and professionalism of the mechanics stood out. For the most part, it was their conduct, such as maintaining a positive attitude even when things were frustrating.
