Be prepared with standby power

Apr 08, 2025 4min read

When disaster strikes—whether it’s a fire, flood, storm, or cyclone—reliable power is more than just a convenience; it’s a lifeline.

As communities begin the difficult task of recovery, power is crucial for everything from emergency services to everyday needs like clean water, temperature regulation such as keeping refrigerators running, and medical devices.

The aftermath of a disaster can be much more devastating without access to power, which is why we’re looking at what you can do to prepare your home or business by having standby power ready to go—before you need it.

Planning ahead

Not to be confused with vampire power (when home appliances in standby mode chew through energy), standby power is supplied by a standby power-rated (or ESP-rated) generator set, either portable or permanently connected, and is designed to be a backup power solution that operates when the mains power supply is down. There are strict standards in Australia governing ESP-rated generators to ensure they can maintain critical operations. This means it’s important to do your research if you think you’ll need to run multiple appliances, equipment or lights before you purchase. Reaching out to an Original Equipment Manufacturer or local power solutions expert about your requirements is a great place to start.

Choosing the right generator

Matching your generator’s power capacity to your needs is crucial. Having more power than you need can lead to unnecessary costs, while having too little could leave your business or home at risk. Your local power solutions expert can help you determine the right size, which might be less than you expect.

When comparing generator options, look for the best value—not just the cheapest option. Consider the long-term cost savings from fuel-efficient models and the potential business losses if your power fails.

Any initial and maintenance costs will likely be worth it in the long run compared to the potential loss of productivity, perishable goods, or even life in emergency or medical settings.

Features to look for

Terrible weather can impact even the toughest generator sets. A smart investment? Enclosed generator sets with weather-resistant casing. These generators are designed with a durable, all-weather casing that prevents moisture, debris, or particles such as dust or ash from blowing in.

Noise output is another point to consider, particularly for use in homes or small businesses.

Petrol and diesel-powered generators are notoriously noisy and can be a real nuisance to neighbours, especially at night. Choosing a low-volume output generator, such as this 20 kVA unit, which operates at 51 decibels (around the same volume as a conversation between two people), may save you an argument—and your sanity during what will be an undoubtedly difficult time.

Placement & maintenance is key

The placement of your generator for easy accessibility and protection from the weather is paramount to ensure it can operate effectively.

Flood-prone or highly exposed areas should be avoided. If you have the choice between multiple locations, choosing one that provides better shelter is the best practice.

If you have a generator already in the wings, here’s a timely reminder to conduct scheduled maintenance so that it remains usable. Nothing is worse than being let down by rusty equipment, a clogged fuel line, or a blown spark plug when you really need that power.

Marine Rescue

NSW Port Stephens is a volunteer-run organisation that monitors privately used watercraft and is also called on to help during larger-scale rescue operations.

Coordinated via their Marine Rescue Radio Communications Centre, which houses a range of cellular networks and 27 MHz and VHF marine radio systems and is home to a weather station that contributes to the Bureau of Meteorology network, the organisation provides vital information on weather monitoring and forecasting in the area.

The Communications Centre also includes a training building that can easily transform into a disaster command post as required, plus an adjoining café for visitors to the Nelson Head Lighthouse.

While perfect for the radio setup, the remote location next to the coastline’s point means power from the main grid is frequently disrupted, calling for a standby power source that’s ready and waiting.

Marine Rescue recently invested in a fully enclosed, weather-resistant 20 kVA generator set that can comfortably power essential radio and weather monitoring equipment and all appliances in the cafe and restaurant when mains power fails.
